The street dogs of Rishikesh, and involvement with them is for some visitors the highlight of their stay. These past years, dog lovers have combined together to organise ways in which hundreds of dogs without owners can be treated for worms, mange, infections and wounds. Sterilisations are also undertaken when volunteer vets arrive. It is delightful to accompany an experienced carer, as they regularly check on the condition of the dogs, feeding programs for the under nourished, and preventative medication for worms, mange rabies etc.
To experience the gratitude of a cared for dog, is truly memorable, and often creates a desire to become more involved. Seeing how a few rupees and compassion can transform a sad, sick dog into a tail wagging healthy being is a better high (and more sustainable) than any dope effect. If you doubt this, and are coming to Rishikesh, get involved and experience for yourself.
Yes the ashrams, temples and Ganga are magical, and the dogs are not separate from this magic.

I am planning to visit haridwar, rishikesh, mussoorie and dehradun. some tour planners had given me budget of rs.35000 for hotel stay and car transport site seeing.My visit is from 07/4/17 to 14/4/17 train reservation already done.Should I accept tour proposal or after reaching haridwar it would be managable
