Located at a mere distance of 6 kms from Indore city, Khajrana Ganesh Mandir is an important religious pilgrimage site of Hindus. It is famous all over the world for having the largest Ganpati statue. When looked closely, it can be observed that the eyes of the deity are made of diamonds. It was constructed by Rani Ahalyabai Holkar, and now is under the care of the local government body, but managed by the Bhatt household. The major festival celebrated here is Vinayak Chaturthi, when hordes of devotees come here to celebrate and seek blessings of the deity. It is located in a calm and serene environment.

2. Indore Museum

Indore Museum is located at the outskirts of the main city and is also known as Central Museum. It was established in the year 1929. The two gigantic galleries of the museum house a wide range of artefacts, ranging from pre nomadic to post independence eras. The Parmar sculptures of Hinglajgarh, intricate ornaments, Jain sculptures, Shiva and Parvati statues, a rich royal door frame, stone tools and weapons, ancient coins and stamps, arms and ammunition are some notable things to see here. Historians, aspiring archaeologists and students spend a lot of time here.

3. Patal Pani Waterfall

Situated at an hour’s drive from Indore, this beautiful place makes a perfect one day picnic spot. The Patal Pani waterfall falls from a majestic height of 300 feet. The monsoon season is when the falls are at their mightiest, other times just reduced to a narrow stream. The word Patal Pani translates to ‘Hell Water’ in Hindi. Legend says that the pool which is formed at the base of the waterfall reaches the underworld, is as deep as that. The area around the waterfall also serves as a trekking route. In the year 2011, high monsoons raised the water levels, resulting in a flood. From 50 on spot tourists, 3 people were washed away in a mighty flow of water and died.

4. Meghdoot Upvan

This beautiful garden is one of the largest in the state of Madhya Pradesh and is located 15 minutes away from Indore city. Meghdoot Upvan is a popular and frequented tourist and picnic destination. Colourful flowers, lush trees, beautiful fountains, green lawns, lights at night, all add to the charm of the garden. It also has a Joggers’ Track, which local people use for morning and evening walks and jogging. The entire park was renovated for the better in 2001, which led to its beautification.

5. Ahilya Fort

Located at Maheshwar, 91 kms from Indore, this historic fort was a main centre of handloom weaving from as early as the 5th century. Ahilya Fort is on the banks of the river Narmada and is surrounded by ghats. Maheshwar served as the capital of Malwa region under the rule of Maratha Holkars. In the latter part of 18th century, the Maratha queen Ahilya Devi Holkar constructed this fort, many temples and other public buildings. After 1818, Indore was made the capital. The fort now comprises of a heritage hotel and resort, consisting of 13 spacious rooms. The beauty of Maheshwar has inspired many filmmakers to shoot scenes from their movies here, the most famous among them being movies like Ashoka, Bajirao Mastani, Neerja, Yamla Pagla Deewana and other Tamil films.

3. The Matatila Dam

Built on the banks of Betwa river, the Matatila Dam is one of the oldest dams in the state, as it was built in 1958. It is an earthen dam and has a capacity of 1132 million cubic metres. With many small hills surrounding the dam, it is also a picturesque location and hence a popular tourist destination.  Visitors can also participate in the water sports held here. The palace was built in 1955 but it is still going strong with its beautiful architecture. There are 8 galleries and each has different collections of artefacts. There are items from the Gupta dynasty, Kalachuri dynasty, Shakti cult and so on. Another collection worth seeing is of the costumes and weapons used by the Bundela Kings. There are also places demarcated as ‘Badan Singh ka Mahal’, ‘Raja ka Mahal’ and ‘Rani ka Mahal’, which means there must have been residences exclusively for the king and queen. The fort, though located deep, is accessible thanks to the transportation facilities available, but you can avail them only from 6 am to 4 pm, post which you will find no way to go to or fro. Hence, it is advised to visit the Fort of Ater only during day time.

2. The Fort of Gohad

Located in the city of Gohad, the Fort of Gohad is just 45 kms away from Gwalior, another prominent place in Madhya Pradesh. The Fort of Gohad was built by Rana Singhandev II, a Jat ruler in 1505, but he could not complete it and later on, subsequent rulers completed the construction. The fort was the seat of strength and pride of the Jat reign.

It is a circular shaped fort and was built for strategic reasons. There are 11 gates to this fort, each named after a local village. There are many structures within the fort which are worth visiting. Most of these structures were meant for residence purposes while some parts served as the courts where the king held his meetings with his ministers. There are also several temples in the vicinity, which add to the beauty and significance of the fort. The fort of Gohad can be reached easily too.

3. Mata Renuka Temple

Revered as the birthplace of the warrior sage, Parashuram, Mata Renuka Temple is dedicated to his mother Renuka. The legend goes that Parashuram’s father ordered him to cut his mother’s head. Since it was his father’s order, Parashuram had to obey it and he did as he was asked. His father was pleased with this and asked him to wish for a boon, to which Parashuram replied that he wanted his mother alive. It was granted.

It is believed that it is the same spot where Mother Renuka came to life again. A temple was later built in her honour and the locals consider this temple to have special powers and it is believed that whoever comes here with faith and asks for a wish, their prayers get answered.

4. The Jain Temples of Baranso

The Jain Temples of Baranso are believed to have been built to commemorate the visit of Lord Mahavir. The temples, with their vivid architectural beauty and the panoramic surroundings, are not just pilgrimage centres but are also one of the most loved tourist destinations. It is visited by people from all walks of life.

5. Vankhandeshwar Temple

Dedicated to Lord Shiva, the Vankhandeshwar Temple is considered to be one of the oldest temples in India, as it is believed that it was built by Prithviraj Chauhan in 1175 AD. There is a flame, known as ‘akhand jyoti’ or ‘eternal flame’ which is believed to have been burning since ages. Badal Mahal Gate is a famous tourist spot in Chanderi and quite a unique place as well. It consists of only one tall gate without having any mahal or palace within it. Built in the 15th century, the Badal Mahal gate was constructed to celebrate an important victory in Chanderi’s history. The gate has an arched entrance with two huge minarets on either side of the arch. The gate has been very skillfully carved with beautiful designs by very skilled craftsmen.

3. Jama Masjid

Jama Masjid was built in the 13th century by Ghiassudin Balban and is one of the most important and popular tourist attractions in Chanderi. It is a huge and magnificent structure and the largest mosque present in Bundelkhand. On the top of the mosque there are three huge domes built over the hall which give the mosque a very magnificent look.

4. Shehzadi Ka Rauza

Shehzadi Ka Rauza is the burial site of Mehrunnisa, the daughter of a governor and her lover who was the chief of the army. Mehrunnissa and her lover breathed their last at this particular place and were buried exactly at the same place. A fort and a pond was built around the resting place of both the lovers so that it could be out of reach of people.

5. Koshak Mahal

This monument was constructed by the Sultan of Malwa to commemorate a victory. Though they had initially planned to make a seven-storey structure but could complete only three storeis. Sultan Mehmood Sharki was defeated by Mehmud Shah Khilji in the battle of Kilpi. The Koshak Mahal was constructed by Mehmud Shah Khilji to celebrate his victory.
